- ASTM A392, zinc-coated steel chain-link fence fabric
- ASTM A854/A854M, metallic-coated steel smooth high-tensile fence wire
Send the standard your specification names. We reply with how we would make and test the fence to it, and send test reports with a project enquiry. Sizes are quoted in feet and inches.
The climate in the United States, and the coating it needs
Average 9.7 °C, 63.7 percent relative humidity and 827 mm of rain a year (World Bank, national averages 1991 to 2020). Most of the country is temperate; tropical marine coasts such as Florida and the Gulf coast are harsher.
ISO 9223 places most rural and inland sites in C2 to C3, and sites 1 to 30 km from the sea in C3. Sites within 1 km of the sea are C4; sites within a few hundred metres of the sea, or on wet tropical coasts, are C5.
Inland, SIMO Securon's grades suit most sites: SIMO Securon Alpha is rated for 35 years or more. Rated life in C1 to C3 environments (ISO 9223) with correct installation. Sites within 20 km of the coast, or chemically aggressive sites (C4 and above), need a site-specific recommendation.
The fence coating calculator works out the least coating for your site's category.
Typical uses of wire fencing in the United States
- Deer exclusion on farms: New Jersey's wildlife fence cost-share programme asks for fixed-knot high-tensile woven wire, 8 ft at least. Source
- Horse paddocks: University of Georgia Extension recommends square knot mesh of high tensile steel. Source
- Livestock and predator control: USDA NRCS woven wire fence practice specification (code 382). Source
For uses like these, SIMO Securon makes the Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence (deer, game, farm and livestock fence) and the ZS-Knot™ anti-climb knotted fence (4 x 2 inch, where people are the threat). Both are built to the buyer's specification. It also makes RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire, and supplies QvikFixrr™ posts and fittings. These are examples from the market, not SIMO Securon projects.
Importing fencing into the United States
- Entry documents (19 CFR 142.3): the entry form, the commercial invoice, the packing list where appropriate, and any agency documents. Source
HS codes: 7313.00: barbed wire of iron or steel (RTHT high tensile barbed wire). 7314.41: cloth, grill, netting and fencing of iron or steel wire, not welded at the intersection, plated or coated with zinc (knotted fence and chain link); 7314.42 if coated with plastics; 7314.49 other. A classification, not a ruling: whether a Zn-Al coating counts as "coated with zinc" under 7314.41 is for the importing country's customs to confirm.
We agree the Incoterm and the port of loading with each quotation.
