Gabion boxes, mattresses and rockfall netting, sourced to your specification

Last updated

A gabion box is a cage of double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh, filled with stone on site to build retaining walls, river protection and erosion control. Gabions are specified to EN 10223-3 or IS 16014:2024 by mesh type, wire (2.0 to 3.9 mm), coating and box size, and priced per unit. SIMO Securon sources them.

SIMO Securon does not manufacture gabions. We source it to your specification or drawing, invoice it to you and inspect it before dispatch, so what you receive meets your requirement. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed, and take up to 45 days from order confirmation. Send us your specification, drawing and quantities, and we will come back with availability and a quotation.

What is a gabion box?

A gabion box is a cage of double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh, assembled on site and filled with stone. Stacked, filled boxes build a gabion wall: retaining walls, abutments, river and canal protection, and slopes held against erosion. The same mesh comes as:

  • Gabion mattresses, shallow and wide, laid flat to line channels, banks and slopes.
  • Sack gabions, for work where a box cannot be placed.
  • Rockfall netting and mesh rolls, hung or pinned over a cutting or slope.

Double-twisted means neighbouring wires are twisted round each other more than once at each join, which is heavier than the netting on farms and gardens.

Gabion specifications: EN 10223-3 and IS 16014

EN 10223-3 is the European standard for hexagonal mesh for engineering, and IS 16014:2024 the Indian Standard. The figures to choose from:

Standards: EN 10223-3 (hexagonal mesh for engineering); IS 16014:2024.

A gabion design comes from the engineer of the works: the unit sizes, the mesh type, the wire, the coating and the lacing. Send the drawing or the bill of quantities, and SIMO Securon sources to it.

What sets the price of a gabion box?

Gabions are quoted per unit, per cubic metre of finished work or, for netting, per square metre or per roll. The price depends on:

  • The unit size, and whether it has diaphragms.
  • The mesh type and wire diameter.
  • The coating: a heavier metallic coating, or PVC over it, for water, salt and abrasion.
  • The quantity and the delivery location.

The stone, its filling and the site work are the contractor’s, and are not part of a sourced order.

Gabion box or welded gabion?

Double-twisted mesh is woven, so a filled gabion can follow settling ground; welded gabions are built from rigid welded panels that keep a square face. Your engineer’s design names which, and its standard: EN 10223-3 for double-twisted, EN 10223-8 for welded.

Gabions are civil works, not a boundary fence. To fence the land around them, see the fixed knot fence, which SIMO Securon makes itself. For light netting on farms, see hexagonal wire netting.

How a gabion order works

  1. Send your specification or drawing for the gabions, with the quantities and the delivery location. Name the standard if your specification names one.
  2. We come back with availability and a quotation. On your order, SIMO Securon invoices you and is your single point of contact for it, including any issue with the material against the agreed specification.
  3. We inspect it before dispatch. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost.
  4. It takes up to 45 days from order confirmation. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed.

For a fence worked out for the boundary around the site, with its posts, use the fencing cost estimator. For the other materials SIMO Securon sources, see fencing materials we source.

FAQ

Gabion questions

What is the difference between a gabion box and a gabion mattress?

A gabion box is a deep cage, stacked to build walls and abutments. A gabion mattress is a shallow, wide cage laid flat to line a channel, a river bank or a slope. Both are double-twisted mesh filled with stone on site.

What mesh do gabions use?

Double-twisted hexagonal mesh, named by type: 5 x 7 (50 mm), 6 x 8 (60 mm), 8 x 10 (80 mm) or 10 x 12 (100 mm), on wire of 2.0 to 3.9 mm. Your design or the standard sets which.

Which coating do gabions in water need?

For water, salt and abrasion, gabions take a heavier metallic coating, or PVC over it. Name the coating, and the exposure, in your specification.

Does SIMO Securon fill or install gabions?

No. Gabions are a sourced material: SIMO Securon supplies the empty units, and your contractor assembles and fills them on site. Send the number of units, their sizes and the site location.
