Fencing guides for farms, plots and projects in India

Last updated

These fencing guides answer the questions buyers ask before they fence: what it must keep out, how long it must last, and the boundary length. A square acre is about 255 metres around; nilgai need a fence at least 6 ft high. A SIMO Securon Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence needs a post every 5 to 6 m.

Which of these fencing guides answers your question?

Each SIMO Securon guide answers one question buyers ask before they fence, in plain language, with the figures to check a quote against.

What each guide answers
  • Longest lasting fence: Which fence lasts longest in India? Barbed wire, chain link, a knotted fence or a wall: what each stops, how long it lasts and how to check quality.
  • Fencing cost in India: Fencing cost in India per acre, per metre, per running foot, per sq ft and per kg: the quantities your land needs and what drives the price.
  • Nilgai fencing guide: Nilgai fencing that protects crops: the height, bottom wire spacing and strength that stop nilgai (blue bull) and wild boar, and why barbed wire fails.
  • Stray cattle fence: A stray cattle fence for farms: the height, wire spacing, post gap, bracing and gates that keep stray cattle out of your crops and your livestock in.
  • Types of fence: Chain link, barbed wire, fixed knot, hinge joint, 358 mesh, deer, game and horse fence, electric fence, posts and walls: what each name means.
  • Compound wall vs fencing: A compound or boundary wall gives privacy. A knotted fence gives equivalent strength, goes up twice as fast and needs far less civil work. Compare the two.
  • Knotted fence vs chain link: Knotted fence vs chain link (jali): conventional galvanised chain link lasts 2 to 5 years in India. How a knotted fence compares on life, posts and cost.
  • Fixed knot fence installation: Post spacing, foundations, bracing, gates, curing and tensioning, step by step, with the installation manual to download.
  • High tensile fence: What makes fence wire high tensile, why a high tensile fence needs fewer posts, post spacing and installation.
  • Low cost farm fencing: Barbed wire and chain link cost least to buy. How to compare farm fencing over the life of the fence: posts, years and upkeep.
  • Fixed knot vs hinge joint: How fixed knot and hinge joint fences are built, which is more rigid, and how far apart their posts go.
  • 4 x 2 anti-climb fence or 358 mesh: The ZS-Knot™ 4 x 2 inch knotted mesh and 358 welded mesh panels, compared line by line on their specifications.
  • Farm fencing subsidy: State farm fencing schemes (tarbandi yojana) from official pages: what each pays for, who qualifies and how to apply.
  • Zinc-aluminium coatings explained: How zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) coatings protect steel wire, which trade names and standards cover them, and how to read a coating specification.

Buying for a project, or selling fencing?

Solar, industrial and corridor buyers can send an RFQ for a bill of quantities and agreed drawings, with test reports from NABL-accredited laboratories on request. Fencing businesses can become authorised SIMO Securon dealers.

Which guide for a farm or plot, and which for a project?

For farms, plots and farmhouses

  • Fencing cost in India: the fence, posts and rolls per acre, per metre, per running foot, per sq ft and per kg, and how to compare quotes.
  • Nilgai fencing: the fence height nilgai (blue bull) need, the bottom wire spacing that stops wild boar, and what to do about deer.
  • Stray cattle fence: keeping stray cattle out of your crops and your own livestock in.
  • Compound wall vs fencing: when a boundary wall is worth its civil work, and when a fence does the job.
  • Knotted fence vs chain link: why a knotted fence lasts longer and needs around half the posts, and where chain link is still the right choice.

FAQ

Quick answers before you fence

How many metres of fence does 1 acre need?

A square 1 acre plot is about 255 metres around, so it needs about 255 metres of fence. A square 2 acre plot is about 360 metres around, 5 acres about 569 metres and 10 acres about 805 metres; a long, narrow plot of the same area needs more.

Compound wall or fence: which should I build?

Build a compound wall if you need privacy or noise screening. If the job is keeping people and animals out, a SIMO Securon high tensile knotted fence has equivalent strength to a precast or masonry wall, installs about twice as fast and needs far less civil work.

Compound wall vs fencing

How high and how tight should a fence be for nilgai and wild boar?

Nilgai need a fence at least 6 ft (1.8 m) high that will not bend or sag. Wild boar push underneath, so the lowest wires must sit about 3.5 inches apart, close to the ground. A high tensile knotted fence on a graduated grid does both.

Does a knotted fence last longer than chain link?

A SIMO Securon knotted fence does: it is rated for 10 years (Pi) to 35 years or more (Alpha), while conventional galvanised chain link (jali) usually corrodes in 2 to 5 years in Indian conditions. The difference is the heavier zinc or zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) coating on its wire.

What should I ask a fencing supplier about wire quality?

Ask for the tensile strength in MPa and the coating mass in GSM, tested to Indian Standards: IS 1608 (Part 1) for tensile strength, IS 6745 for coating mass and adherence, and IS 9844 for salt spray. SIMO Securon wire is tested at NABL-accredited laboratories, with reports for project buyers on request.

How many posts per km does a long perimeter need?

With a post every 5 metres, a straight kilometre of knotted fence needs 201 posts, against 401 for conventional galvanised chain link at 2.5 metres. Corner and end posts also need bracing, so count them separately.
