Heavy duty chain link fence: 4.0 to 5.0 mm wire, made to your height

Last updated

Heavy duty chain link fence is woven from thick wire, 4.0 to 5.0 mm, for taller fences and sites that take hard use. IS 2721 lists 3.76 and 4.88 mm wire on 44 to 50 mm mesh among its sizes, and EN 10223-6 runs to 5.00 mm. SIMO Securon makes it to your height, with posts and line wires to suit.

Chain link, also called cyclone fence or jali, is sized by its wire and its mesh. Heavy duty chain link uses thick wire, about 4.0 to 5.0 mm, so each diamond is stiffer and the mesh is harder to bend out of shape.

The standards set the range:

  • IS 2721:2025 lists wire from 2.03 to 4.88 mm; its heaviest sizes include 3.76 and 4.88 mm wire on 44 to 50 mm mesh.
  • EN 10223-6:2012 covers wire up to 5.00 mm.

Many quotations give wire as a gauge number. Gauge systems differ, and sellers convert them differently, so ask for the diameter in mm, as both standards state it.

Heavy mesh is chosen for taller fences and for sites that take hard use. IS 2721:2025 gives standard heights of 0.91 to 3.66 m, with custom heights up to 6.56 m; EN 10223-6 gives typical heights of 0.5 to 4.0 m.

A heavier, taller mesh needs a frame to match:

  • Line wires run along the fence to carry the mesh: IS 2721 asks for two line wires up to 2 m high, and three from 2.5 m.
  • Posts stand every 2.5 to 3 m, as for any chain link, sized for the height, the mesh and the ground. The quotation names them.
  • Terminal, corner and gate posts are braced, so the pull of the mesh never rests on a line post.

See chain link fence installation for the order of work.

Grade Coating Rated life (C1 to C3, ISO 9223)
SIMO Securon Alpha Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum 35+ years
SIMO Securon Zeta Nova Zn-Al 90/10, 120 GSM 20 years
SIMO Securon Pi Zinc, 80 to 100 GSM, with topcoat 10 years

Rated life assumes correct installation; sites within 20 km of the coast, or chemically aggressive sites, need a site-specific recommendation.

Heavy duty chain link suits a tall, tough mesh over a short run, a yard or an enclosure, or a specification that names it. For a long boundary, a high tensile fixed knot fence stands its posts 5 to 6 metres apart, so it needs around half the posts. For a stronger wire rather than a thicker one, see high tensile chain link.

Tell us the wire, the mesh, the height, the length and the grade. SIMO Securon makes chain link to its own grades, and builds any order to IS 2721:2025 or EN 10223-6:2012 when your specification calls for it. SIMO inspects every order; external testing and third-party inspection are available on request, at extra cost. It comes supply only, or supplied and installed anywhere in India. FAQ

What wire size is heavy duty chain link?

Heavy duty chain link is woven from wire of about 4.0 to 5.0 mm. IS 2721:2025 lists wire from 2.03 to 4.88 mm, with 3.76 and 4.88 mm wire on 44 to 50 mm mesh among its heaviest sizes; EN 10223-6 runs to 5.00 mm. Ask for the wire diameter in mm, not as a gauge number alone.

Is 4 mm chain link heavy duty?

Yes: 4 mm wire is at the heavy end of the IS 2721 range, which runs from 2.03 to 4.88 mm. Thicker wire weighs more per metre, so it needs posts and line wires sized for it, and it costs more per running metre.

How tall can heavy duty chain link be?

IS 2721:2025 gives standard heights of 0.91 to 3.66 m, and custom heights up to 6.56 m; EN 10223-6 gives typical heights of 0.5 to 4.0 m. SIMO Securon makes chain link to your height, with three line wires from 2.5 m.

What grade is heavy duty chain link made in?

SIMO Securon makes chain link in its Alpha, Zeta Nova and Pi grades. The grade sets the coating and the rated life: 35 years or more, 20 years and 10 years respectively, in C1 to C3 environments with correct installation. Each order is confirmed individually.
