Fencing jali: wire jali for farms, plots and boundaries
Last updated
Fencing jali is the wire mesh that fences a farm, plot or boundary, not a decorative or window jali. The main types are chain link jali, knotted jali, 4 x 2 inch anti-climb jali, welded jali and chicken jali, often with barbed wire (kantedar taar) along the top. SIMO Securon makes chain link and knotted jali in Nagpur.
Types of fencing jali, in buyers' words
Six kinds of wire jali go round farms, plots and boundaries. Each card says what it is, where it suits, and whether SIMO Securon makes it or sources it to your specification.
Chain link jali
Also called chainlink jali, GI jali, diamond jali
- What it is
- Wire woven into diamonds, with no knots. Posts every 2.5 to 3 metres.
- Where it suits
- Small plots, gardens, courts and temporary boundaries.
Made by SIMO Securon
Knotted jali
Also called the Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence
- What it is
- High tensile wire locked at every crossing by a separate knot wire, closest at the bottom where animals push.
- Where it suits
- Farms against nilgai, wild boar and cattle, and long boundaries.
Made by SIMO Securon
4 x 2 anti-climb jali
Also called the ZS-Knot™ 4 x 2 inch anti-climb knotted fence
- What it is
- A knotted jali on a 4 x 2 inch grid, too narrow for a toe or finger hold. Made in Alpha and Zeta Nova.
- Where it suits
- Factories, warehouses and plots where people climbing in is the risk.
Made by SIMO Securon
Barbed wire (kantedar taar)
Also called barbwire, barbed wire fencing
- What it is
- Two twisted wires with sharp barbs. SIMO Securon makes RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire; standard GI barbed wire is sourced.
- Where it suits
- Farm boundaries, and the top of a knotted or chain link jali fence.

Welded jali
Also called weld mesh jali, welded mesh

Chicken jali
Also called chicken mesh, hexagonal netting

- Poultry runs and light garden fencing.

Jali sizes and gauges in plain words
Four things describe any fencing jali. Ask for each in writing, and compare quotes at the same size.
- Height, in feet: 5 ft (1.5 m), 6 ft (1.8 m) or 8 ft (2.4 m). Against nilgai and cattle, a fence needs to be at least 6 ft high.
- The opening, the size of each gap. Chain link openings run 10 to 54 mm under IS 2721. Knotted jali has a graduated grid: line wires 3.5 inches apart at the bottom to 7 inches at the top, with a stay every 6 inches. The ZS-Knot™ knotted fence comes on 4 x 2, 4 x 4 and 3 x 3 inch grids; only the 4 x 2 inch grid is anti-climb.
- The wire, its thickness. Sellers give it as a gauge (SWG) or in mm; in SWG, the smaller the number, the thicker the wire.
- The roll length: Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence comes in rolls of 50 m (Alpha), 30 m (Zeta Nova) and 100 ft (30.5 m) (Pi). Chain link to IS 2721 comes in rolls of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 m.
| Gauge | Wire thickness |
|---|---|
| 6 SWG | 4.88 mm |
| 8 SWG | 4.06 mm |
| 10 SWG | 3.25 mm |
| 12 SWG | 2.64 mm |
| 14 SWG | 2.03 mm |
Full chain link sizes, with the standards, are on chain link mesh sizes.
How long does fencing jali last?
The coating sets the life. SIMO Securon's jali comes in three grades, rated by the coating on the wire.
| Specification | Alpha | Zeta Nova | Pi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rated life | 35+ years | 20 years | 10 years |
| Coating | Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum | Zn-Al 90/10, 120 GSM | Zinc, 80 to 100 GSM, with topcoat |
| Post spacing | 5 to 6 m | 5 m | 5 m |
SIMO Securon’s chain link takes the same coating and rated life as its grade. Conventional galvanised chain link, as commonly sold, carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc and lasts 2 to 5 years in Indian conditions. Welded and chicken jali are sourced, so they carry no rated life from SIMO Securon. How the figures are worked out is on quality and testing.

FAQ
Fencing jali questions
What is fencing jali?
Fencing jali is wire mesh used as a fence: the mesh fixed between posts round a farm, plot or boundary. Jali (also spelt jaali) is the everyday word for wire mesh in much of India; it also names decorative and window jali, which are not fences.
Which jali is used for farm fencing?
Against nilgai (blue bull), wild boar and cattle, knotted jali: a high tensile fixed knot fence at least 6 ft high, its wires closest at the bottom where animals push. Chain link jali suits a short or light boundary, and barbed wire (kantedar taar) is often run along the top.
Farm fencingWhat is the price of fencing jali?
It depends on the type of jali, the wire gauge, the opening, the height, the coating, the boundary length and the posts. Jali is often quoted per kg, so compare quotes per running metre of finished fence. SIMO Securon sends your price on WhatsApp; the estimator on this page works out the posts and rolls.
What gauge of jali should I buy?
The gauge is the wire's thickness: in SWG, a smaller number is a thicker wire (10 SWG is 3.25 mm; 12 SWG is 2.64 mm). Thicker wire is stronger and heavier. Ask for the wire in mm and the coating mass in GSM, in writing, and compare quotes at the same size.
Is chain link jali the same as GI jali?
GI jali is galvanised chain link: woven wire coated with zinc. SIMO Securon makes GI chain link in its Pi grade, and chain link in zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) in Alpha and Zeta Nova, which carry far more coating than chain link as commonly sold.
GI chain link fencingDoes SIMO Securon make welded jali or chicken jali?
No. SIMO Securon makes chain link jali, knotted jali and RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire. Welded jali (weld mesh) and chicken jali (hexagonal netting) are sourced to your specification: they carry no rated life from SIMO Securon, and your own contractor installs them.
