Fence strength: what makes one fence stronger than another?
Last updated
Fence strength comes from the wire's tensile strength and from how the crossings are held. SIMO Securon's Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence uses high tensile wire of 1150 to 1300 MPa in Alpha and Zeta Nova, against 400 to 550 MPa for conventional galvanised chain link. Its knot locks every crossing.

Fence wire tensile strength by technology
The Q-Knot figure is for Q-Knot only. ZS-Knot is made to its own design, at 700 to 800 MPa in every grade, and its 4 x 2 inch grid is the anti-climb fence.
What a fixed knot does for a fence's strength
- It locks every crossing. In a fixed knot fence a separate knot wire wraps each crossing of a line wire and a stay, so the wires cannot slide along each other. Pushed by an animal, the fence takes the load across many wires.
- It keeps the fence rigid, which lets a tight, high tensile fence span 5 to 6 metres between posts, against 2.5 to 3 metres for chain link: around half the posts.
- It holds its shape. Woven chain link is one wire spiralled through the next; a knotted fence is built crossing by crossing, so the grid stays in place.

More about fence strength
Does a stronger fence last longer?
Not by itself. Strength is in the wire; life is in the coating and the site. SIMO Securon’s grades are rated for 35 years or more (Alpha), 20 years (Zeta Nova) and 10 years (Pi).
How is tensile strength tested?
Wire samples are pulled to breaking in a tensile test, and SIMO Securon’s fencing is tested at NABL-accredited laboratories. Test reports are offered to project buyers on request: see quality and testing.
FAQ
Fence strength: questions
What is tensile strength in a fence?
The pull a wire takes before it breaks, per square millimetre of its section, in MPa (N/mm²). High tensile fence wire carries more pull at a smaller size, so the fence can be tensioned tight and spans further between posts without sagging.
How strong is a Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence?
Its wire is 1150 to 1300 MPa in Alpha and Zeta Nova and 850 to 900 MPa in Pi. The knot locks every crossing, so the fence stays rigid and its posts stand 5 to 6 metres apart.
Is a ZS-Knot™ knotted fence as strong as a Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence?
A ZS-Knot™ knotted fence is made to a different design: its wire is 700 to 800 MPa in every grade, and the knot wraps above and below each crossing. Its 4 x 2 inch grid is the anti-climb fence, where the threat is a person climbing.
Is chain link strong enough for a farm?
Conventional galvanised chain link wire is 400 to 550 MPa. It suits a short or light boundary and costs less upfront; its posts stand 2.5 to 3 metres apart, and in Indian conditions it lasts 2 to 5 years.
