Hinge joint fence (field fence), sourced to your specification

Last updated

A hinge joint fence, also called field fence or stock fence, is woven wire with short stays wrapped round each line wire, so each joint can hinge. It is specified to EN 10223-5 by class (low tensile 1L to 1H, high tensile 2L to 2H), height and roll length, and priced per roll. SIMO Securon sources it.

SIMO Securon does not manufacture hinge joint fence. We source it to your specification or drawing, invoice it to you and inspect it before dispatch, so what you receive meets your requirement. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed, and take up to 45 days from order confirmation. Send us your specification, drawing and quantities, and we will come back with availability and a quotation.

What is a hinge joint fence?

A hinge joint fence is a woven wire fence: horizontal line wires and vertical stays. Each stay is a short length of wire between two line wires, wrapped round them where it crosses, so the joint can turn a little under a push and spring back. Buyers also call it field fence, stock fence, hinge knot fence or woven wire fence. It comes in rolls.

Hinge joint fence specifications: EN 10223-5

EN 10223-5 is the European standard for woven hinged joint fencing. It sorts the fence into low and high tensile classes:

Standards: EN 10223-5 (woven hinged joint fencing).
ClassFigures from the standards
Low tensile: classes 1L, 1M and 1HTop and bottom wires of 2.5, 3.0 and 3.7 mm, at 550 to 600 N/mm²
High tensile: classes 2L, 2M and 2HWires of 1.6 to 3.0 mm, at 1,050 N/mm²
Stay wires350 to 600 N/mm²

A complete specification names the class, the height, the number of line wires and their spacing, the stay spacing, the coating and the roll length. Send the specification or the drawing, and SIMO Securon sources to it.

What sets the price of hinge joint fence?

Hinge joint fence is quoted per roll or per running metre. The price depends on:

  • The class: low or high tensile wire, and its diameters.
  • The height and the number of line wires.
  • The stay spacing: closer stays use more wire.
  • The coating, the roll length, the quantity and the delivery location.

To work out how much fence a number of rolls covers:

Convert rolls to running metres

Running metres = number of rolls × roll length in metres.

Hinge joint fence or fixed knot fence?

Both are woven wire fences; the difference is the joint. A fixed knot fence locks each crossing with a separate knot wire and its stays run the full height, so the mesh keeps its shape between posts set further apart. A hinge joint is built to give under a push and spring back. SIMO Securon makes the fixed knot fence itself, and sources hinge joint fence where a specification names it.

The two are compared in full, on construction, rigidity and post spacing, in fixed knot vs hinge joint fence. For light netting for small animals, see hexagonal wire netting.

How a hinge joint fence order works

  1. Send your specification or drawing for the hinge joint fence, with the quantities and the delivery location. Name the standard if your specification names one.
  2. We come back with availability and a quotation. On your order, SIMO Securon invoices you and is your single point of contact for it, including any issue with the material against the agreed specification.
  3. We inspect it before dispatch. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost.
  4. It takes up to 45 days from order confirmation. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed.

FAQ

Hinge joint fence questions

What do the classes 1L to 2H mean?

EN 10223-5 sorts hinge joint fence by wire. Classes 1L, 1M and 1H are low tensile, with top and bottom wires of 2.5, 3.0 and 3.7 mm at 550 to 600 N/mm². Classes 2L, 2M and 2H are high tensile, with wires of 1.6 to 3.0 mm at 1,050 N/mm².

Low or high tensile hinge joint fence: which do I need?

It depends on the animals, the length of the run and how far apart the posts can stand. A high tensile wire carries more load at a smaller diameter. Tell us what the fence must hold, and we suggest a class.

Can SIMO Securon supply hinge joint fence to a tender specification?

Yes. SIMO Securon sources it to the class, height and roll length your specification names, invoices it and inspects it before dispatch. It is supplied only, not installed.

Is a hinge joint fence the same as a knotted fence?

No. Both are woven wire, but a fixed knot (knotted) fence locks each crossing with a separate knot wire and its stays run the full height, while a hinge joint fence has short stays wrapped round each line wire.
