Forest fencing up to 8 ft for forest boundaries, zoos and wildlife areas

Last updated

Forest and zoo fencing needs a tall, rigid fence that holds its line when a large animal pushes it, keeps the view open for patrols and visitors, and has no barbs. SIMO Securon suggests an 8 ft (2.4 m) Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence in Alpha, rated for 35 years or more, or Zeta Nova, rated for 20 years.

Which forest fencing do we suggest?

Secure containment with an open view. Designs shown are a starting point for discussion, not for construction.

What does a forest or zoo boundary fence have to do?

A forest, wildlife area or zoo boundary fence has four jobs: hold its line against large animals, keep sightlines open, turn animals away without injuring them, and last in remote country.

Chain link, a knotted fence or a wall for a forest boundary?

  • Conventional chain link: woven diamond mesh on posts every 2.5 metres.

    Conventional chain link

    • Lowest cost at the start.
    • Corrodes in 2 to 5 years in Indian conditions.
    • Posts 2.5 to 3 m apart.
  • Precast or masonry wall

    • Blocks the view.
    • Heavy civil work in remote country.
    • The right answer where privacy or noise is the need.

For example, a square 5-acre site has a boundary of about 569 m: 114 posts at a 5 m gap, against 228 for conventional galvanised chain link at 2.5 m.

How long will a forest or zoo fence last?

SIMO Securon Alpha: 35+ years rated life in C1 to C3 environments (ISO 9223). Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum.SIMO Securon Zeta Nova: 20 years rated life in C1 to C3 environments (ISO 9223). Zn-Al 90/10, 120 GSM.
  • SIMO Securon Alpha is rated for 35 years or more.
  • SIMO Securon Zeta Nova is rated for 20 years.

What is the specification of 8 ft wildlife fencing?

SIMO Securon suggests a Q-Knot fixed knot fence at 8 ft (2.4 m) in Alpha or Zeta Nova: 19 line wires in Alpha or 20 in Zeta Nova, on the graduated grid with line wires closer at the bottom, a stay every 6 inches and a Q-Knot at every crossing. Posts stand 5 to 6 m apart for Alpha and 5 m for Zeta Nova, and are made to the design on fence supply orders of 2 km running length and above.

Rigid, see-through, barb-free and long-lived: why each matters
  • Rigid: a tall fence that does not lean or open up when an animal pushes against it.
  • See-through: patrols and visitors need to see through it; a wall blocks the view.
  • Barb-free: a knotted fence turns animals away rather than cutting them.
  • Long-lived: replacing a fence along a long, hard-to-reach boundary is slow and costly, so the wire’s coating matters.

How high should a forest or zoo fence be?

SIMO Securon suggests 8 ft (2.4 m) for forest boundaries, wildlife areas and zoos. On farmland, 6 ft is the minimum against nilgai, and 5 to 6 ft is enough for wild boar and smaller animals, with the wires tight at ground level. 8 ft is a custom height, made in Alpha and Zeta Nova.

8 ft (2.4 m) is a custom height in Alpha and Zeta Nova; posts made to suit it come with fence supply orders of 2 km and above. Open the drawing full size: Fence heights: 5 ft, 6 ft and 8 ft
Alpha or Zeta Nova: which suits a forest boundary?

The SIMO Securon Alpha knotted fence is rated for 35 years or more and the Zeta Nova knotted fence for 20 years. Alpha carries the heavier coating (Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum) and is tested to 2,000 hours salt spray without red rust, so it suits long, remote boundaries that are slow and costly to reach. Zeta Nova suits boundaries where a 20-year rated life is enough.

What evidence can forest departments and zoos ask for?

Forest departments, zoos and their contractors can ask SIMO Securon for test reports from NABL-accredited laboratories, a trial panel, an inspection of manufacture and testing at the works in Butibori, Nagpur, with pre-despatch inspection accepted, its ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications, and a clause-by-clause response to their drawings and specification. The tests differ by grade:

  • Alpha: tensile strength to IS 1608 (Part 1), and salt spray to IS 9844, with 2,000 hours without red rust.
  • Zeta Nova: tensile strength to IS 1608 (Part 1), coating mass and adherence to IS 6745, and salt spray, with 1,200 hours without red rust.

Reports and certificates go to project teams on request; they are not published online. Request test reports and certificates, or see the same offer for corridors on highway and railway fencing.

Supply only, supply and install, or turnkey EPC?

  • Supply only, with a trainer to work alongside your team or contractor on tensioning, bracing and fixing, and instructional videos to return to.
  • Supply and install by SIMO Securon’s trained crews, under one contract and one point of responsibility.
  • Turnkey EPC: site survey, design to the drawings agreed with you, supply, installation, inspection and handover with documentation.

Fence supply orders of 2 km running length and above come with one free set of installation tools per project (terms and conditions apply), and the option of custom posts, foundations and designs. Contractors bidding for forest or zoo work can be supplied directly, on supply-only terms, with test reports sent to the project team on request. See supply, installation and turnkey EPC services, or use the fencing cost calculator for the quantities for your boundary.

FAQ

Forest and zoo fencing questions

Will a knotted fence hold large animals in a zoo or reserve?

SIMO Securon's suggested design for zoos, reserves and forest boundaries is an 8 ft high tensile knotted fence with no barbs. A large animal that pushes against it meets a rigid grid, knotted at every crossing, that springs back and turns it away rather than cutting it, while patrols and visitors can still see through.

Can SIMO Securon supply a wildlife fence for a boundary shorter than 2 km?

Yes. Below 2 km, SIMO Securon supplies Alpha or Zeta Nova up to 6 ft on standard QvikFixrr™ 8.5 ft posts. Alpha and Zeta Nova are also made up to 8 ft (2.4 m) to order, but posts made to suit an 8 ft fence come only with fence supply orders of 2 km running length and above, so for a shorter boundary, tell the team which posts you plan to use.

Why not build a wall around a forest or zoo?

A SIMO Securon knotted fence does the same job and keeps the view open: it has equivalent strength to a precast or masonry wall and goes up twice as fast. A wall blocks the view that patrols and visitors need, and along a long boundary it means heavy civil work and a long build.

Compound wall or fencing

How long does supply of an 8 ft forest fence take?

About 7 days for standard rolls and 30 to 45 days for custom projects, from order confirmation. An 8 ft design on posts made to suit it is a custom project.
