Welded gabions and gabion baskets, sourced to your specification
Last updated
A welded gabion is a basket of welded wire mesh panels, joined with lacing wire and filled with stone on site. It is specified to EN 10223-8 by mesh (50 x 50 to 100 x 100 mm), wire of at least 3 mm, weld strength and coating, and priced per unit. SIMO Securon sources welded gabions to your design.
SIMO Securon does not manufacture welded gabions. We source it to your specification or drawing, invoice it to you and inspect it before dispatch, so what you receive meets your requirement. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed, and take up to 45 days from order confirmation. Send us your specification, drawing and quantities, and we will come back with availability and a quotation.
What is a welded gabion?
A welded gabion is a box of welded wire mesh panels, sides, ends, base and lid, joined on site with lacing wire and filled with stone. Buyers also call it a gabion basket. Shallow, wide units are welded mattresses. Because the panels are welded, a filled basket keeps square, flat faces.
- The wire: at least 3 mm for gabions and 2.7 mm for mattresses
- The weld: shear at least 75 percent of the wire's breaking load, on average
- The mesh size: 50 x 50 to 100 x 100 mm
Welded gabion specifications: EN 10223-8
EN 10223-8 is the European standard for welded mesh gabions. The figures to choose from:
| Specification | Figures from the standards |
|---|---|
| Mesh | 50 x 50, 75 x 75, 100 x 50 or 100 x 100 mm |
| Wire | At least 3 mm for gabions and 2.7 mm for mattresses; under PVC, cores of 2.7 and 2.4 mm |
| Lacing wire | At least 2.2 mm |
| Tensile strength | Above 500 MPa |
| Weld strength | Weld shear at least 75 percent of the wire's breaking load, on average |
| Coating | Zn95/Al5 class A, or PVC, by exposure |
A complete specification names the unit size, the mesh, the wire, the coating for the exposure, and the lacing. Your engineer’s design or bill of quantities sets them; send it with your enquiry.
What sets the price of a welded gabion?
Welded gabions are quoted per unit or per cubic metre of finished work. The price depends on:
- The unit size, and any internal diaphragms.
- The mesh and wire: a smaller mesh and thicker wire use more steel.
- The coating: Zn95/Al5 class A, or PVC over it, by exposure.
- The quantity and the delivery location.
The stone, its filling and the site work are the contractor’s, and are not part of a sourced order.
Welded gabion or double-twist gabion?
A welded basket is rigid and keeps a square face. A double-twisted woven gabion, under EN 10223-3, can follow settling ground. Your engineer’s design names which; both are on this site: gabions (double twist) and welded gabions here.
Gabions are civil works, not a boundary fence. To fence the land around them, see the fixed knot fence, which SIMO Securon makes itself. For welded mesh in rolls or panels for fencing, see weld mesh.
How a welded gabion order works
- Send your specification or drawing for the welded gabions, with the quantities and the delivery location. Name the standard if your specification names one.
- We come back with availability and a quotation. On your order, SIMO Securon invoices you and is your single point of contact for it, including any issue with the material against the agreed specification.
- We inspect it before dispatch. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost.
- It takes up to 45 days from order confirmation. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed.
For a fence worked out for the boundary around the site, with its posts, use the fencing cost estimator. For the other materials SIMO Securon sources, see fencing materials we source.

FAQ
Welded gabion questions
What wire does a welded gabion use?
EN 10223-8 asks for wire of at least 3 mm for gabions and 2.7 mm for mattresses; under a PVC coat, cores of 2.7 and 2.4 mm. The lacing wire is at least 2.2 mm, and the wire's tensile strength is above 500 MPa.
How strong must the welds be?
EN 10223-8 asks for a weld shear of at least 75 percent of the wire's breaking load, on average. Ask for it in writing with the quotation for any welded gabion.
Is a gabion basket the same as a welded gabion?
Usually, yes: gabion basket is the everyday name for a welded mesh gabion. Double-twisted woven gabions are a different product, under EN 10223-3.
Gabions (double twist)Does SIMO Securon fill or install welded gabions?
No. Welded gabions are a sourced material: SIMO Securon supplies the units, and your contractor assembles and fills them. Send the number of units, their sizes and the site location.
