Wire mesh for fencing: which type do you need?
Last updated
Wire mesh for fencing is steel wire made into a fence: knotted (fixed knot) mesh, chain link, welded mesh, hexagonal chicken mesh, 358 mesh, barbed wire or razor wire. Choose it by what the fence must keep out and how long it must last. SIMO Securon makes knotted mesh, chain link and barbed wire, and sources the rest.
Wire mesh for fencing, type by type
The wire mesh used for fences in India, type by type. Each card says what it is, where it suits, and whether SIMO Securon makes it, supplies it or sources it to your specification.
Knotted mesh (fixed knot fence)
Also called knotted wire mesh, field fence, deer fence
- What it is
- High tensile line wires and stays, locked at every crossing by a separate knot wire, so the mesh cannot slip.
- Where it suits
- Farms against nilgai, wild boar and cattle; solar parks, factories and long boundaries.
Made by SIMO Securon
Anti-climb knotted mesh (4 x 2 inch)
Also called 4 x 2 anti climb fence, anti climb mesh
- What it is
- The ZS-Knot™ knotted fence on its 4 x 2 inch grid: openings too narrow for a toe or finger hold.
- Where it suits
- Factories, data centres and any site where the threat is a person climbing.
Made by SIMO Securon
Chain link mesh (jali)
Also called chainlink, diamond mesh, GI chain link
- What it is
- Wire woven into diamonds, with no knots or welds. Posts every 2.5 to 3 metres.
- Where it suits
- Short or light boundaries, gardens, courts and temporary fencing.
Made by SIMO Securon
Welded mesh (weld mesh)
Also called welded wire mesh, weld mesh jali
- What it is
- Straight wires welded at every crossing into fixed rectangles, in rolls or flat panels.
- Where it suits
- Small even openings: poultry and small-animal enclosures, partitions and guards.
Sourced to your specification
Hexagonal mesh (chicken mesh)
Also called chicken wire, poultry net
- What it is
- Light wire twisted into six-sided openings, in rolls.
- Where it suits
- Poultry runs, rabbit and bird netting, and light garden fencing.
Sourced to your specification
358 mesh
Also called clear view fence, 358 panel
- What it is
- A welded panel of 4 mm wire with very narrow openings, 76.2 x 12.7 mm.
- Where it suits
- High-security perimeters where a specification names it.
Sourced to your specification
Barbed wire (kantedar taar)
Also called barbwire, barbed wire fencing
- What it is
- Two twisted line wires with sharp barbs. SIMO Securon makes RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire; standard GI barbed wire is sourced.
- Where it suits
- Farm boundaries and the top of a knotted or chain link fence.
Made by SIMO SecuronSourced to your specification
Razor wire (concertina coil)
Also called concertina wire, razor mesh
- What it is
- Coils of sharp galvanised blade on a high tensile core wire, seated on post attachments.
- Where it suits
- The top of a security fence, to stop people climbing over.

Wire mesh or fence: is it the same thing?
Mostly, yes. In India people ask for a fence in many words: wire mesh, jali (the everyday word for wire mesh), wire netting, wire fencing, or tarbandi (wire fencing round a field). They mean a steel wire fence.
The difference is only where you stop counting:
- The mesh is the fabric you see between the posts: knotted, chain link, welded or hexagonal.
- The fence is the mesh with its posts, the clips and fittings that hold it, and anything on top, such as barbed wire or concertina coil.
A mesh is only as good as what holds it. SIMO Securon supplies its fences with matched QvikFixrr™ posts and fittings, so the posts and clips last as long as the mesh.
Buyers also search for the same fence as fencing mesh, fence mesh, mesh wire, wire net, fencing net, boundary net, steel fencing, metal fencing, GI fencing, compound fencing, iron fence and fence panels. Every one of them leads to one of the types above.
Steel mesh, metal mesh and GI wire mesh
Steel mesh and metal mesh are wide words. For a fence they mean steel wire mesh, coated so it does not rust. The same words are also used for reinforcement mesh laid in concrete, and for woven or welded screens in machines; neither is a fence.
GI wire mesh, or galvanised wire mesh (galvanized, in American spelling), is steel wire coated with zinc. Iron mesh usually means the same. What sets its life is the coating mass, in grams per square metre (GSM):
- Conventional galvanised chain link, as commonly sold, carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc and lasts 2 to 5 years in Indian conditions.
- SIMO Securon’s Alpha grade carries a zinc-aluminium coating, Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum, and is rated for 35 years or more.
Whatever you buy, ask for the coating type and its mass in writing. How SIMO Securon’s figures are worked out is on quality and testing.

FAQ
Wire mesh fencing questions
Which wire mesh is used for farm fencing?
For nilgai (blue bull), wild boar and cattle, a high tensile knotted mesh such as the Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence, at least 6 ft high, with posts 5 to 6 metres apart. Chain link suits a short or light boundary, and barbed wire is often run along the top.
Farm fencingIs wire mesh the same as a fence?
The mesh is the part of the fence you see between the posts. A fence is the mesh with its posts, fittings and anything on top, such as barbed wire. Buyers use the words for the same thing: wire mesh, jali, wire netting and wire fencing all mean a steel wire fence.
What is GI wire mesh?
GI wire mesh is wire mesh made of galvanised iron: steel wire coated with zinc, so it rusts more slowly. How long it lasts depends on how much zinc is on the wire, so ask for the coating mass in GSM, in writing.
Which wire mesh stops people climbing over?
A mesh with openings too narrow for a toe or a finger. SIMO Securon's ZS-Knot™ anti-climb knotted fence has a 4 x 2 inch grid; a 358 welded panel, which SIMO Securon sources, does the same with narrower openings. Concertina coil on top adds a further barrier.
ZS-Knot 4 x 2 anti-climb fenceIs knotted mesh stronger than chain link?
The wire is: Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence wire is 1150 to 1300 MPa in Alpha and Zeta Nova, against 400 to 550 MPa for conventional galvanised chain link. Its knots lock every crossing, so the mesh stays rigid between posts 5 to 6 metres apart.
What is the price of wire mesh for fencing?
It depends on the type, the wire, the coating, the height, the boundary length, the posts and whether it is installed. SIMO Securon does not publish prices: use the fencing cost estimator for the posts and rolls your site needs, or send your details on WhatsApp for a quotation.
Fencing cost estimatorDoes SIMO Securon make welded mesh?
No. SIMO Securon makes knotted mesh, chain link and RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire in Nagpur. Weld mesh, chicken mesh and 358 mesh are sourced to your specification or drawing: they carry no rated life from SIMO Securon, and your own contractor installs them.
