GI chain link fencing: galvanised, in Pi grade or to IS 2721

Last updated

GI chain link fencing is galvanised chain link: steel wire coated with zinc, woven into diamonds. SIMO Securon makes it in its Pi grade, Zinc, 80 to 100 GSM, with topcoat, rated for 10 years, or to IS 2721 Class 1 heavy zinc when your specification calls for it. Ask any supplier for the coating mass in writing.

GI stands for galvanised iron: steel wire coated with zinc. GI chain link, also called galvanised chain link, cyclone fence or jali, is that wire woven into diamonds. The zinc protects the steel, so the mass of zinc on the wire decides how long the fence lasts.

Chain link as commonly sold carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc. Quotations rarely say how much zinc is on the wire, so ask for it in writing: in GSM, grams per square metre of wire surface.

SIMO Securon makes GI chain link in two ways.

Compared on SIMO Securon Pi IS 2721:2025 Class 1
What it is SIMO Securon’s own grade The Indian Standard’s galvanised class, built when your specification calls for it
Wire To your size To IS 280, 400 to 550 MPa
Zinc coating Zinc, 80 to 100 GSM, with topcoat Heavy zinc to IS 4826, 260 to 290 g/m² by wire size
Rated life (C1 to C3, ISO 9223) 10 years A standard’s build, not a SIMO Securon grade

IS 2721’s heavy zinc rises with the wire size: 260 g/m² at 2.24 to 2.8 mm, 270 at 2.8 to 3.55 mm, 280 at 3.55 to 4.0 mm and 290 at 4.0 to 5.0 mm. The Pi grade’s coating is lighter than that, so a Pi order is not an IS 2721 order; when your specification names IS 2721, the order is built to it.

GI chain link costs less to buy. Zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) chain link carries a heavier, more protective coating, so SIMO Securon rates it for longer:

Grade Coating Rated life (C1 to C3, ISO 9223)
SIMO Securon Pi (GI) Zinc, 80 to 100 GSM, with topcoat 10 years
SIMO Securon Zeta Nova Zn-Al 90/10, 120 GSM 20 years
SIMO Securon Alpha Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum 35+ years

Rated life assumes correct installation; sites within 20 km of the coast, or chemically aggressive sites, need a site-specific recommendation. Read more on zinc-aluminium chain link. For a long boundary against animals, a fixed knot fence needs around half the posts of chain link.

Ask each supplier to state, in writing:

  • The wire diameter in mm, not only a gauge number
  • The mesh size in mm, the height and the roll length (see chain link sizes)
  • The coating: zinc or zinc-aluminium, and its mass in GSM
  • The standard, if any, and its class: IS 2721 Class 1, for example
  • The weight per running metre, if the price is per kg

Then compare the price per running metre of finished fence, with the posts; see chain link fencing price for what sets it.

Tell us the wire, the mesh size, the height, the length, and the grade or standard your specification names. SIMO inspects every order; external testing and third-party inspection are available on request, at extra cost. It comes supply only, or supplied and installed by SIMO Securon’s crews anywhere in India. FAQ

How much zinc should GI chain link carry?

Chain link as commonly sold carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc. SIMO Securon's Pi grade carries Zinc, 80 to 100 GSM, with topcoat. IS 2721:2025 Class 1 asks for heavy zinc to IS 4826, from 260 to 290 g/m² as the wire gets thicker. Whoever you buy from, ask for the coating mass in writing.

How long does GI chain link last?

SIMO Securon Pi chain link is rated for 10 years in C1 to C3 environments (ISO 9223) with correct installation. Conventional galvanised chain link usually lasts 2 to 5 years in Indian conditions. For a longer life, the zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) grades are rated for 20 years (Zeta Nova) and 35 years or more (Alpha).

How is GI chain link priced?

It is quoted per kg, per square foot, per roll or per running metre, and the price depends on the wire, the mesh, the height, the coating mass and the length, plus the posts. Compare quotes per running metre at the same specification, with the coating mass stated.

Does SIMO Securon make GI chain link to IS 2721?

Yes, when your specification calls for it: IS 2721:2025 Class 1, galvanised wire to IS 280 at 400 to 550 MPa with heavy zinc to IS 4826. The Pi grade is SIMO Securon's own specification, lighter than IS 2721's heavy coating, so a Pi order is not an IS 2721 order.
