Fence installation cost: what sets the price of putting a fence up?
Last updated
Fence installation cost depends on the site more than on the fence: the ground, the slope, the access, how far the crew travels, how the posts are set, and the corners and gates. A knotted fence needs around half the posts of chain link, so fewer pits and less concrete, and installs about 40 percent faster.

To count the posts and pits on their own, or the barbed wire and the transport weight, use the other fencing tools.
What raises or lowers fence installation cost?
Every installed price is a range until the site is known. These move it, and each says which way:
- Soil and rock. Rock or very hard ground raises the price: every pit takes longer to dig. Soft, even soil keeps it down.
- Slope. A slope or uneven ground raises it: shorter runs, more strain posts and more careful tensioning.
- Access. A site that trucks and crews cannot reach easily raises it: material is carried further by hand.
- Distance and crew travel. A site far from the nearest crew raises it; one near other work, or several sites close together, keeps it down.
- Concrete or driven posts. Posts set in concrete cost more than posts driven into the ground, and suit more kinds of ground.
- Corners and gates. Each corner and gate adds a braced strain post, so more of them raise it.
- Job size. A longer fence brings the price per metre down; a short one raises it.
How a knotted fence cuts installation: fewer posts, pits and concrete
The work of installing a fence is mostly at the posts: setting out, digging each pit, setting and concreting the post, and bracing the strain posts. A knotted fence’s posts stand 5 to 6 metres apart, against 2.5 to 3 metres for conventional galvanised chain link. So it needs around half the posts, and installs about 40 percent faster than chain link.
| Boundary | Posts, knotted fence (5 m) | Posts, chain link (2.5 m) | Pits, knotted fence | Pits, chain link | Rolls (30 m) | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 m | 100 | 200 | 124 | 240 | 17 | Work it out |
| 1,000 m | 200 | 400 | 240 | 480 | 34 | Work it out |
| 5,000 m | 1,000 | 2,000 | 1,200 | 2,400 | 167 | Work it out |
Counts for SIMO Securon Zeta Nova, a Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence 6 ft high, with a strain post at each corner and every 10th post. Every strain and corner post is braced, and each post and brace needs a pit.
The counts above are worked out for each length. The calculator counts them for your own site, with its corners and gates.

Correct installation is the main condition for a fence to reach its rated life: 35 years or more for Alpha, 20 years for Zeta Nova and 10 years for Pi. See the installation guide and installation services.
More about fence installation cost
Supply only, or supplied and installed?
With supply only, you buy the fence, posts and fittings and your own contractor installs them; with supplied and installed, SIMO Securon’s trained crews do the work, and one contract covers both. The calculator gives a supplied and installed range for fences of 5 km or more; for a smaller fence, ask us.
What does the crew need from the site?
A clear boundary line, access for a vehicle as close to the line as possible, water for the concrete, and the gates and corners marked. Tell us about rock, slopes and anything buried along the line before the quotation.
FAQ
Fence installation cost: questions
What does fence installation cost depend on?
The ground (soil or rock), the slope, and how easily trucks and crews reach the boundary. Then how far the crew travels, whether the posts are set in concrete or driven, the corners and gates, and the length of the job. A longer fence brings the cost per metre down.
Why does a knotted fence take less work to install than chain link?
Because it needs around half the posts: its posts stand 5 to 6 metres apart, against 2.5 to 3 metres for chain link. Fewer posts mean fewer pits to dig and less concrete, and the fence installs about 40 percent faster than chain link.
Does SIMO Securon install small fences?
The calculator gives a supplied and installed range for fences of 5 km or more. For a smaller fence, ask us: sites close to other work can be combined, and a local contractor can install SIMO Securon's fence with the installation guide.
Fence installation guideIs a fence's labour cost part of the installation cost?
Yes. Fence labour, or fence fixing charges, are the crew's work on site: setting out, digging, setting the posts, bracing, running and tensioning the fence, and fixing it. Ask whether a quote includes the concrete, the transport to site and GST.
Want your fence installed?
Send the boundary length, the site's PIN code and photographs of the ground on WhatsApp, or call us. The SIMO Securon team checks the site and sends a price, supplied and installed.
