Fencing wire price: plain GI wire to IS 280, sourced to your specification

Last updated

Fencing wire is plain galvanised (GI) steel wire, priced per kg, and the price depends on the diameter, the zinc coating and the quantity. IS 280:2006 sets the wire, with preferred fencing sizes from 2.00 to 5.00 mm, and IS 4826:2023 the zinc. SIMO Securon sources plain GI fencing wire to your specification.

SIMO Securon does not manufacture plain GI fencing wire. We source it to your specification or drawing, invoice it to you and inspect it before dispatch, so what you receive meets your requirement. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed, and take up to 45 days from order confirmation. Send us your specification, drawing and quantities, and we will come back with availability and a quotation.

What is plain GI fencing wire?

Plain GI fencing wire is mild steel wire with a zinc (galvanised) coating, sold in coils by weight. On a fence it is used for line wires and strands, for straining and stay wires, and for tying. Buyers also search for it as GI wire, iron fencing wire or tar (taar, wire) fencing.

The wire is set by IS 280:2006, and its zinc coating by IS 4826:2023.

A complete specification names the diameter, the zinc class (heavy, medium or light), the tensile range if it matters, the coil size and the quantity.

What sets the fencing wire price?

Fencing wire is priced per kg. The price depends on:

  • The diameter: it sets how many metres a kilogram gives, so compare prices per metre as well as per kg.
  • The zinc class: heavy zinc carries more zinc per square metre of wire than medium or light.
  • The quantity, the coil size and the delivery location.

To see how many metres of wire a weight gives at your diameter:

Convert kilograms of wire to metres

Metres = weight in kg ÷ (6.17 × diameter in mm × diameter in mm ÷ 1,000), for bare steel; the zinc adds a little weight.

Fencing wire or a woven fence?

Plain strands on posts mark a line and carry other fences; on their own, they keep few animals out. For a boundary that must stop animals or people:

  • A high tensile woven fence: the fixed knot fence, which SIMO Securon makes itself, in rolls.
  • Strands with barbs: see barbed wire, including RTHT™, SIMO Securon’s own high tensile barbed wire.
  • A woven field fence: the hinge joint fence, which SIMO Securon sources.

How a fencing wire order works

  1. Send your specification or drawing for the fencing wire, with the quantities and the delivery location. Name the standard if your specification names one.
  2. We come back with availability and a quotation. On your order, SIMO Securon invoices you and is your single point of contact for it, including any issue with the material against the agreed specification.
  3. We inspect it before dispatch. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost.
  4. It takes up to 45 days from order confirmation. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed.

FAQ

Fencing wire questions

How many metres of fencing wire are in 1 kg?

It depends on the diameter: steel weighs about 6.17 x d² grams per metre, for a diameter d in mm, so 1 kg of bare 4 mm wire is about 10 metres and 1 kg of 2.5 mm wire about 26 metres. The zinc adds a little weight.

Which zinc coating should fencing wire have?

For a fence outdoors, heavy zinc to IS 4826:2023, which rises with the diameter: 240 g/m² at 1.8 to 2.24 mm up to 290 g/m² at 4.0 to 5.0 mm. Light and medium classes are for lighter duty. Ask for the class in writing.

What is tar fencing?

Tar (taar, wire) fencing is the everyday name for a wire fence in much of India: strands of plain or barbed wire on posts, or a woven mesh. Plain GI wire is sourced by SIMO Securon; for a woven fence, see the fixed knot fence.
