Fixed knot fence questions and answers

Common fixed knot fence questions, answered: the SIMO Securon Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence is a high tensile knotted fence with a knot locking every crossing, made in Nagpur in three grades: Alpha, rated for 35 years or more; Zeta Nova, 20 years; and Pi, 10 years. It needs around half the posts of conventional galvanised chain link.

Questions about choosing a fixed knot fence

What is a fixed knot (knotted) fence?

A fixed knot fence, also called a knotted fence, is a high tensile wire fence in which a knot locks every crossing of a horizontal line wire and a vertical stay. On SIMO Securon's Q-Knot, a separate length of wire is wrapped around each crossing, so the knot cannot slip and the fence holds its shape between posts 5 to 6 m apart.

What is high tensile fencing?

High tensile fencing is made from higher-carbon steel wire, which takes far more load before it stretches or breaks than the low-carbon steel wire of conventional galvanised chain link. SIMO Securon Q-Knot wire is 1150 to 1300 MPa in Alpha and Zeta Nova and 850 to 900 MPa in Pi, against 400 to 550 MPa for conventional galvanised chain link.

Knotted fence grades and specifications

Which grade should I choose?

Choose by how long the fence must last. SIMO Securon Alpha is rated for 35 years or more, Zeta Nova for 20 years and Pi for 10 years. Alpha suits solar parks, factories and other critical or high-security sites; Zeta Nova suits farms, estates, solar and industrial perimeters; Pi suits farms, plots and general boundaries on a tighter budget.

What is the difference between Q-Knot and ZS-Knot™?

Q-Knot keeps animals out: a fixed knot fence made in Alpha, Zeta Nova and Pi. ZS-Knot (Anti Climb) keeps people out: on its 4 x 2 inch anti-climb grid, up to 8 ft high, the gaps are too narrow for a toe or finger hold. ZS-Knot is made in Alpha and Zeta Nova.

How is knotted fence different from chain link?

SIMO Securon Q-Knot fence in Alpha and Zeta Nova uses wire up to three times as strong as conventional galvanised chain link (1150 to 1300 MPa against 400 to 550 MPa; Pi is 850 to 900 MPa). Its fixed knots cannot slip, so it holds its shape on around half the posts, and its crimped line wires spring back after an impact. Chain link (jali) costs less to buy and suits short, low-risk runs.

Knotted fence vs chain link

Does SIMO Securon sell chain link and barbed wire?

Yes. Chain link is made to order under QvikFixrr™, to IS 2721 or in Zeta Nova grade Zn-Al coating. RTHT™ is SIMO's reverse-twisted high tensile barbed wire (kantedar taar), 800 MPa and 15.5 x 15.5 SWG, in Zeta Nova grade Zn-Al coating. Each bundle is 200 m, 12 to 13 kg.

Should I build a compound wall instead?

Build a compound wall or boundary wall if you need privacy, screening or noise reduction. If you need to keep people and animals out, a SIMO Securon fence has equivalent strength to a precast or masonry wall, goes up twice as fast and needs far less civil work.

Farm fencing: nilgai, wild boar and cattle

What fence height keeps nilgai and stray cattle out?

Nilgai (blue bull) need a fence at least 6 ft (1.8 m) high that does not bend or sag when they push against it. For nilgai and stray cattle, SIMO Securon suggests Zeta Nova or Alpha at 6 ft, on the Q-Knot graduated grid.

Will a knotted fence stop wild boar?

A knotted fence stops wild boar when its lowest wires sit close together, because boar push underneath. The Q-Knot graduated grid puts its line wires closest at the bottom, 3.5 inches apart in Alpha and Zeta Nova, and its fixed knots cannot slip, so the openings keep their size. Pi suits wild boar and smaller animals.

How many posts does a 5 acre farm need?

A square 5 acre farm is about 569 metres around. With a post every 5 metres, a SIMO Securon fence needs about 114 posts, against about 228 for conventional galvanised chain link at 2.5 metres. Corner and end posts also need bracing.

Rated life, coating and coastal sites

How long does a SIMO Securon fence last?

A SIMO Securon fence is rated for 35 years or more in Alpha, 20 years in Zeta Nova and 10 years in Pi, with correct installation. Conventional galvanised chain link usually lasts 2 to 5 years in Indian conditions.

What does rated life mean?

Rated life is how long a SIMO Securon fence is designed to last in C1 to C3 environments under ISO 9223, which typically covers inland rural areas, towns and cities, and light industry, with correct installation. It is a design figure, not a guarantee.

What are C1 to C3 environments?

ISO 9223 grades how corrosive the air is, from C1 (very low) to C5 and CX (very high and extreme). C1 to C3 typically covers inland rural areas, towns and cities, and light industry. Sites within 20 km of the coast, and chemically aggressive sites, are usually C4 or above and need a site-specific recommendation.

What is Zn-Al coating?

Zn-Al is a zinc-aluminium alloy coating on steel wire; on SIMO Securon Alpha and Zeta Nova it is 90 percent zinc and 10 percent aluminium. Alpha carries Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum; Zeta Nova carries Zn-Al 90/10, 120 GSM. Conventional galvanised chain link wire carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc. More coating means a longer life before the steel starts to rust.

Quality and testing

Can a knotted fence be used near the sea?

Sites within 20 km of the coast, and chemically aggressive sites, are usually C4 or above under ISO 9223 and need a site-specific recommendation. Send your PIN code and SIMO Securon will advise.

What is the difference between rated life and the written guarantee?

Rated life is how long a SIMO Securon fence is designed to last in C1 to C3 environments with correct installation: a design figure, stated for every buyer. The written guarantee is a separate promise to retail buyers who register within 30 days: if the wire breaks due to red rust formation within its period, SIMO replaces it. Its periods are shorter than the rated life, and its terms are on the guarantee page.

Posts, installation and service

How far apart do fence posts (poles) go on a knotted fence?

SIMO Securon Alpha uses posts 5 to 6 m apart, and Zeta Nova and Pi 5 m apart, against 2.5 to 3 m for conventional galvanised chain link. On a 30 metre run that is 7 posts instead of 13.

Does SIMO Securon install the fence?

Yes. SIMO Securon offers supply only, supply and install by its trained crews, and turnkey EPC. Supply and install suits most sites, because correct installation is what lets the fence reach its rated life.

Can my own team install a SIMO Securon fence?

Yes. With a supply-only order, SIMO Securon can send a trainer to work alongside your team on tensioning, bracing and fixing, with instructional videos to return to. Orders of 2 km running length and above get one free set of installation tools per project; terms and conditions apply.

How are rolls joined on long runs?

Rolls of SIMO Securon fence are joined by splicing and twisting the line wires together. There is no welding and no joint, so the coating stays intact.

Where does SIMO Securon supply and install?

Anywhere in India: once an order is confirmed, SIMO Securon arranges a crew for the site. It works from its head office and works in Nagpur and offices in Ahmedabad, Pune and Mumbai, open by appointment, and serves sites including Jaipur, Rajkot, Delhi, Lucknow, Bhopal, Kolkata, Patna and Ranchi.
