Barbed wire price: per kg, per metre and what sets the rate
Last updated
Barbed wire (kantedar taar) is priced per kg or per metre, and the rate depends on the wire, its coating, the barbs and the quantity. SIMO Securon makes RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire, rated for 15 years or more, and sources standard GI barbed wire to IS 278. Compare quotes per metre, not per kg.
What sets the price of barbed wire?
Barbed wire, called kantedar taar in much of India, is two line wires twisted together with sharp barbs wrapped round them at intervals. Its price is quoted per kg, per metre, per bundle or per coil, and it depends on:
- The wire: high tensile, or ordinary lower-strength wire, and its size
- The coating: zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) or zinc, and how much of it
- The barbs: how many points, and how far apart they are
- The quantity: the length of the boundary times the number of strands
- The posts and fittings it runs on, if they are part of the order
- Where it goes: the delivery location
Send these with your quantity and you get a quotation for your own order. No price list is published, because the same words cover very different wires.
Barbed wire rate: per kg or per metre?
Many shops sell barbed wire by weight, but a boundary is measured in metres, and barbed wires weigh very different amounts per metre. A kilogram of RTHT is about 15 to 17 metres of wire. A kilogram of standard GI barbed wire to IS 278 is about 6.5 to 13 metres, because it weighs 78 to 155 g per metre.
So a lower rate per kg can still mean a higher price per metre of boundary. Compare quotes per metre, for the same number of strands, and ask each supplier for the weight per metre in writing.
| Barbed wire | Weight per metre | Metres in a kilogram |
|---|---|---|
| RTHT high tensile barbed wire | about 60 to 65 g | about 15 to 17 metres |
| Standard GI barbed wire, IS 278 | 78 to 155 g per metre | about 6.5 to 13 metres |
RTHT or standard GI barbed wire: which should you buy?
SIMO Securon makes RTHT, its own reverse-twisted high tensile barbed wire, in Nagpur. It does not make standard GI barbed wire, and sources it for buyers whose specification calls for it. The table compares the two.
| Compared on | RTHT high tensile barbed wire | Standard GI barbed wire |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes it | SIMO Securon, in Nagpur | Sourced by SIMO Securon to your specification |
| Specification | SIMO Securon’s own: 15.5 x 15.5 SWG, reverse-twisted | IS 278:2009; EN 10223-1 in Europe |
| Wire strength | 800 MPa | Line wire 390 to 590 N/mm² |
| Coating | Zeta Nova grade Zn-Al, 120 GSM | Medium or heavy zinc coating to IS 4826 |
| Weight per metre | about 60 to 65 g | 78 to 155 g per metre |
| Rated life (C1 to C3, ISO 9223) | 15+ years | Not stated: a sourced product |
| How it comes | Bundles of 200 m, 12 to 13 kg | To your order |
Choose RTHT where you want a high tensile wire with a zinc-aluminium coating and a stated rated life, on top of a fence or on its own. Choose standard GI barbed wire where your specification or tender names IS 278, or a wire size and barb spacing that RTHT does not match. Read the full RTHT specification.
Standard GI barbed wire to IS 278
SIMO Securon does not manufacture standard GI barbed wire. We source it to your specification or drawing, invoice it to you and inspect it before dispatch, so what you receive meets your requirement. External testing or third-party inspection can be arranged on request, at extra cost. Sourced materials are supplied only, not installed, and take up to 45 days from order confirmation. Send us your specification, drawing and quantities, and we will come back with availability and a quotation. SIMO Securon invoices it and is your single point of contact for the order.
IS 278:2009 is the Indian Standard for galvanised barbed wire. The figures a specification usually quotes from it:
| IS 278:2009 sets | Figure |
|---|---|
| Line wire | 2.50 or 2.24 mm |
| Point (barb) wire | 2.50 or 2.00 mm |
| Barbs | 4 points, every 75 or 150 mm (±12 mm) |
| Weight | 78 to 155 g per metre |
| Line wire strength | 390 to 590 N/mm² |
| Breaking load | At least 3.7 kN on 2.50 mm line wire, at least 3.0 kN on 2.24 mm line wire |
| Zinc coating | Medium or heavy zinc coating to IS 4826 |
Ask any supplier to state the line wire size, the barb spacing, the zinc coating class and the standard in writing, so two quotations can be compared like for like.
How much barbed wire does a boundary need?
Multiply the length of the boundary by the number of strands. One strand usually runs on top of a fence; several run on their own between posts. For RTHT, divide by the bundle of 200 m and round up: each strand of a 1 km boundary takes 5 bundles.
The fencing cost estimator works out a fence for your boundary, with its posts and an RTHT topping, and lists the material. For the barbed wire alone, share your requirement below.
Barbed wire on its own, or on top of a fence?
Strands of barbed wire mark a boundary and deter people from climbing over a fence, but they leave gaps that animals such as wild boar push through. Where animals are the problem, a fixed knot fence closes those gaps, and barbed wire goes on top only where people are a threat as well.
On solar parks, factories and warehouses, RTHT goes in the attachments of QvikFixrr posts above the fence fabric. Where people are the main threat, it sits above a ZS-Knot™ 4 x 2 inch anti-climb fence, often with concertina coil.

FAQ
Barbed wire questions
What is the price of barbed wire per kg?
It depends on the wire, its coating, the barbs and the quantity, so ask for a quotation against your specification. Compare per metre as well as per kg: a kilogram of RTHT is about 15 to 17 metres of wire, and a kilogram of standard GI barbed wire to IS 278 is about 6.5 to 13 metres. Send your quantity on WhatsApp to +91 93730 08466.
How many metres of barbed wire are in 1 kg?
About 15 to 17 metres of RTHT high tensile barbed wire, whose bundle is 200 m, 12 to 13 kg. Standard GI barbed wire to IS 278 weighs 78 to 155 g per metre, so a kilogram is about 6.5 to 13 metres, depending on the wire size and the barb spacing.
What is the difference between RTHT and GI barbed wire?
RTHT is SIMO Securon's reverse-twisted high tensile barbed wire: 15.5 x 15.5 SWG, 800 MPa wire and Zeta Nova grade Zn-Al coating, rated for 15 years or more. Standard GI barbed wire is zinc-coated wire to IS 278, with line wire of 390 to 590 N/mm². SIMO Securon makes RTHT and sources GI barbed wire.
RTHT high tensile barbed wireDoes SIMO Securon make GI barbed wire?
No. SIMO Securon makes RTHT high tensile barbed wire, and sources standard GI barbed wire to your specification or drawing, invoices it and inspects it before dispatch. Sourced barbed wire is supplied only, not installed, and takes up to 45 days from order confirmation.
Razor wire or barbed wire: which goes on top of a fence?
Barbed wire runs in strands along the top of a fence. Concertina coil is razor wire formed into coils, a deeper barrier against climbing over. Sites where people are the threat often use both, on the attachments of the fence posts.
