Angle weight calculator: what does my angle iron weigh?
The SIMO Securon angle weight calculator gives the weight of MS equal angles to IS 808, the steel used for fence posts, braces and arms. It works black or galvanised, per piece and for the whole order, with the area to galvanise. Pick a size from the angle weight chart, or enter your own leg and thickness.

How the angle weight calculator works
- Black weight (IS 808). The calculator takes the weight per metre of the equal angle from the IS 808 table where it lists the size. For any other size it works it out from the steel in the cross-section: thickness x (2 x leg − thickness) x 7,850 kg per cubic metre.
- Surface area. An equal angle has four faces of about its leg’s width, so about 4 x leg of surface for every metre of length.
- Galvanising. The zinc is the surface area times the coating thickness, at 7.14 g per square metre for every micron. Hot-dip galvanising for posts is usually given in microns; 0 gives black steel.
- Per piece and in total. Each figure times the length of a piece, then times the number of pieces, with the tonnage for transport.
How many posts, braces and pits a fence needs is in the fence post calculator; the transport weight of a whole order is in the fence weight calculator.
FAQ
Angle weight calculator questions
How is the weight of an angle worked out?
For a standard size, from the weight per metre in the IS 808 table, times the length. For a size the table here does not list, from the steel in its cross-section: thickness times twice the leg less the thickness, times 7,850 kg per cubic metre. That lands within about 2% of IS 808.
How much does galvanising add to an angle?
Its surface area times the coating thickness: each micron of zinc weighs 7.14 g on a square metre. An equal angle has about four times its leg of surface per metre, so an ISA 50 x 50 x 6 mm angle at 80 microns gains a little over 2.5% in weight.
What angles does a SIMO Securon fence use?
QvikFixrr™ posts are angles: 50 x 50 x 6 mm intermediate and 65 x 65 x 6 mm terminal and corner posts, on standard 8.5 ft shafts, hot-dip galvanised or epoxy coated. Put your own sizes in the calculator to weigh them.
Can I enter the weight per metre of the steel I bought?
Not here: the calculator uses the IS 808 figure or the cross-section. Rolled sections vary a little from the table, so weigh a piece of your own stock if the exact weight matters.
