Fence weight: how much does a fence weigh per sq ft and per sq m?
Last updated
Fence weight depends on the family and the specification: the wire, its coating and the mesh. For planning transport, a knotted fence or chain link weighs from under 1 kg to a few kg per square metre of fence face. Weight does not measure a fence's strength or life: tensile strength and coating do.

Fence weight per sq ft and per sq m, by family
Fence face is the height times the length. Each band below runs across several specifications, so it shows the order of weight for a family, not the weight of one fence.
| Fence | Covers | kg per sq m | kg per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence | Alpha, Zeta Nova and Pi, every height | about 0.6 to 1 | about 0.05 to 0.1 |
| ZS-Knot™ knotted fence | Alpha and Zeta Nova; 4 x 2, 4 x 4 and 3 x 3 inch grids; 6 and 8 ft | about 0.7 to 1.9 | about 0.07 to 0.17 |
| Chain link, 14 SWG (2.03 mm) | galvanised, 25 to 50 mm mesh | about 0.8 to 2.6 | about 0.08 to 0.24 |
| Chain link, 12 SWG (2.64 mm) | galvanised, 40 to 75 mm mesh | about 0.9 to 2.7 | about 0.09 to 0.25 |
| Chain link, 10 SWG (3.25 mm) | galvanised, 50 to 75 mm mesh | about 1.4 to 3.3 | about 0.13 to 0.31 |
| Chain link, 8 SWG (4.06 mm) | galvanised, 50 to 75 mm mesh | about 2.2 to 5 | about 0.2 to 0.47 |
| RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire | 15.5 x 15.5 SWG, by the bundle | A bundle is 200 m, 12 to 13 kg. | |
Each band runs from the lightest to the heaviest fence it covers, widened by at least 20 percent each way and rounded outward. So it is good for planning a vehicle, not for pricing one fence. Fence face is the height times the length. The weight of your own order comes with its quotation.
Why weight is not a fair way to compare fences
- Strength is in the wire, not its weight. The Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence uses high tensile wire of 1150 to 1300 MPa in Alpha and Zeta Nova; conventional galvanised chain link wire is 400 to 550 MPa. Wire of the same size and higher tensile strength holds more. See fence strength.
- Life is in the coating. A fence lasts as long as its coating protects the steel. SIMO Securon Alpha carries Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum and is rated for 35 years or more; conventional galvanised chain link carries 40 to 60 GSM.
- The posts matter more than the mesh. A knotted fence needs around half the posts of chain link, because its posts stand 5 to 6 metres apart.
More about fence weight
How is a fence's weight worked out?
From how it is made. A knotted fence is weighed from its wires, knots and coating. Chain link and barbed wire are weighed from the wire and mesh sizes, and the wires and barbs, that their standards give. The bands above are worked out the same way, then widened and rounded, so they suit planning and nothing more.
Chain link gauges and wire sizes
Chain link is made in wire from 2.03 mm (14 SWG) to 4.88 mm (6 SWG) under IS 2721. The heavier the gauge, the heavier the fence per square metre for the same mesh. See chain link sizes.
FAQ
Fence weight: questions
How much does a fence weigh per square metre?
A knotted fence weighs from under 1 kg to about 2 kg per square metre of fence face, and galvanised chain link from under 1 kg to about 5 kg, rising with the wire gauge. These are wide bands for planning a vehicle; the weight of an order comes with its quotation.
Is a heavier fence a better fence?
No. A heavier fence can use thicker, softer wire. Strength comes from the wire's tensile strength and the knot that locks every crossing, and life from the coating and the site's corrosion. Compare those, and the posts each fence needs.
Fence strengthHow heavy is a bundle of barbed wire?
A bundle of SIMO Securon RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire is 200 m, 12 to 13 kg. Barbed wire is usually sold by the bundle or by weight, so check the length in each bundle when you compare.
How do I work out the transport for my order?
Enter the rolls, bundles, coils and posts in the fence weight calculator: it gives a tonnage range and the truck loads. Fence rolls are bulky, so a truck can fill up before it reaches its weight limit.
