Zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) chain link, made to last longer
Last updated
Zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) chain link is woven from wire coated with zinc and aluminium instead of zinc alone. SIMO Securon makes it in two grades: Alpha, with Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum, rated for 35 years or more; and Zeta Nova, with Zn-Al 90/10, 120 GSM, rated for 20 years. Chain link as commonly sold carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc.
What is zinc-aluminium chain link?
Chain link, also called cyclone fence or jali, is a mesh of wires woven into diamonds. Zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) chain link is woven from wire coated with an alloy of zinc and aluminium. SIMO Securon’s Zn-Al coating is 90 percent zinc and 10 percent aluminium, the same coating as its Alpha and Zeta Nova knotted fences.
Chain link as commonly sold is galvanised: zinc alone, usually 40 to 60 GSM of it. SIMO Securon makes Zn-Al chain link in Nagpur, in two grades, for buyers who want chain link to stay in service for many years rather than a few.
Zinc aluminium chain link grades and rated life
| Grade | Coating | Rated life (C1 to C3, ISO 9223) | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIMO Securon Alpha | Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum | 35+ years | Industrial sites, solar parks and critical perimeters that must last |
| SIMO Securon Zeta Nova | Zn-Al 90/10, 120 GSM | 20 years | Estates, farms and commercial boundaries |
Rated life is how long the fence is designed to last with correct installation. Sites within 20 km of the coast, or chemically aggressive sites, need a site-specific recommendation: tell us where the fence goes. For zinc-coated chain link, see GI chain link, made in the Pi grade.
Why does Zn-Al chain link last longer?
Two things protect the wire: how much coating it carries, and what the coating is made of.
- More coating. Alpha carries Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum, four to six times the coating mass of chain link as commonly sold, which is 40 to 60 GSM of zinc. Zeta Nova carries Zn-Al 90/10, 120 GSM.
- A zinc-aluminium alloy. EN 10223-6, the European standard for chain link fencing, takes the view that Zn95/Al5 at class B gives a similar service life to zinc at class A, at roughly half the mass (135 against 255 g/m² on 3 mm wire). That is the standard’s view of the Zn95/Al5 alloy it names; SIMO Securon’s alloy is 90/10, and its rated lives come from its own grades, not from that comparison.
The heavier the coating, the longer before red rust reaches the steel. Ask any supplier for the coating type and its mass in writing, in GSM (grams per square metre), so two quotations can be compared.
Long-life chain link or a knotted fence?
Chain link suits a short run, an enclosure inside a site, or a specification that names chain link. It needs a post every 2.5 to 3 m, because the woven mesh has no knots to keep it rigid.
For a long boundary, a high tensile knotted fence stands its posts 5 to 6 metres apart, so it needs around half the posts. See knotted fence vs chain link, or the fixed knot fence.
How do you order Zn-Al chain link?
Tell us the grade, the wire, the mesh size, the height and the length. SIMO Securon makes chain link to its own grades, and builds any order to IS 2721:2025 or EN 10223-6:2012 when your specification calls for it. SIMO inspects every order; external testing and third-party inspection are available on request, at extra cost.
It comes supply only, or supplied and installed by SIMO Securon’s crews anywhere in India. The price depends on the grade, the wire, the mesh, the height and the length; see chain link fencing price for how it is quoted. Coloured, PVC-coated chain link is a different product, which SIMO Securon sources and does not make. To see how many posts chain link needs on your boundary, beside a knotted fence, use the fencing cost estimator.

FAQ
Zinc-aluminium chain link questions
How long does zinc-aluminium chain link last?
SIMO Securon Alpha chain link is rated for 35 years or more and Zeta Nova for 20 years, in C1 to C3 environments (ISO 9223) with correct installation. Chain link as commonly sold carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc, and conventional galvanised chain link usually lasts 2 to 5 years in Indian conditions.
Which standard covers zinc-aluminium chain link?
EN 10223-6, the European standard for chain link fencing, allows zinc or Zn95/Al5 coatings. IS 2721:2025 covers galvanised and polymer-coated chain link. SIMO Securon's Alpha and Zeta Nova grades are its own specifications, and any order can be built to IS 2721:2025 or EN 10223-6:2012 when your specification calls for it.
Is Zn-Al chain link worth it over GI chain link?
It depends on how long the fence must last. GI chain link costs less to buy. Zn-Al chain link carries a heavier, more protective coating, so SIMO Securon rates it for longer: 20 years for Zeta Nova and 35 years or more for Alpha, against 10 years for its Pi grade, which is zinc coated.
GI chain link fencingIs cyclone fence the same as chain link?
Yes. Cyclone fence is another name for chain link, the woven diamond mesh called jali in much of India. SIMO Securon makes it in zinc-aluminium (Zn-Al) in its Alpha and Zeta Nova grades, and in zinc in its Pi grade.
