Chain link weight calculator: how much does my chain link weigh?

The SIMO Securon chain link weight calculator gives the approximate weight of chain link (chainlink jali) per roll, per sq m, per sq ft and per running metre. Choose the mesh, the wire gauge, the height and the coating, in IS 2721 and EN 10223-6 sizes. Then compare it with a knotted fence on posts, strength, coating and life.

Chain link weight calculator

Choose the mesh, wire gauge, height and coating. Our server works out the weight per roll, per sq m, per sq ft and per running metre.

What mesh size is the chain link (jali)?

Measured across one diamond, between the wires.

Did you know? A knotted fence needs around half the posts of chain link: its posts stand 5 to 6 m apart, chain link's 2.5 to 3 m.

Which wire gauge?

A heavy wire needs an open mesh: 4 mm wire is woven on 40 mm mesh and up.

Did you know? The higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire: 8 SWG is about 4 mm, 14 SWG about 2 mm.

How high is the fence?

Did you know? Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence wire in Alpha and Zeta Nova is 1150 to 1300 MPa; conventional chain link wire is 400 to 550 MPa.

How is the wire coated?

Did you know? Conventional galvanised chain link carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc; SIMO Securon's Alpha grade carries Zn-Al 90/10, 240 GSM minimum.

The roll, and your fence

Add your fence length or the area of mesh to get the rolls and the total weight.

Leave it blank for the weight per unit only.

Did you know? Conventional galvanised chain link lasts 2 to 5 years in Indian conditions; SIMO Securon's grades are rated for 10 years (Pi) to 35 years or more (Alpha).

A chain link weight chart for every size

The calculator works as a chain link weight chart. Choose any mesh from 25 to 100 mm and any wire from 2.03 mm (14 SWG) to 4.88 mm (6 SWG), at a height from 0.9 to 3 m. It gives the weight per roll, per square metre (sq m) and per sq ft, and per running metre (meter) of fence, as a range.

After the weight comes the comparison that matters more: a knotted fence needs around half the posts, its wire is stronger, and its coating lasts longer. See the chain link vs knotted fence comparison, or the other fence weight calculators. To price a whole fence, use the fencing cost calculator.

More about the chain link weight calculator

How the weight is worked out

On our server, from how chain link is made. The mesh and the wire thickness set the length of wire in each square metre, with an allowance for the weave. That wire is weighed as steel, with its zinc. The answer is widened into a range and rounded outward, because rolls vary with the weave, the wire tolerance and the coating.

The sizes and their standards

Mesh sizes and wire gauges follow IS 2721:2025 and EN 10223-6:2012. A heavy wire needs an open mesh, so the calculator pairs them as the standards do. “Galvanised, as commonly sold” means a light zinc coat of about 40 to 60 GSM; heavy zinc is the coat IS 4826 sets for the wire size.

Chain link from SIMO Securon

SIMO Securon makes chain link in the Alpha, Zeta Nova and Pi grades, with the coatings of its knotted fences. This calculator weighs chain link to the standards’ generic sizes, not SIMO Securon’s grades. For the weight of a SIMO Securon roll, ask us in writing.

FAQ

How much does a roll of chain link weigh?

It depends on the mesh, the wire gauge, the height, the roll length and the zinc. A heavier gauge or a smaller mesh puts more wire in each square metre. Choose your size in the calculator for the weight per roll, then ask the seller for the weight of the exact roll in writing.

What is the chain link weight per metre (per meter) and per foot?

The weight per running metre is the weight per sq m times the fence height. The calculator gives it for your height, with the weight per sq m and per sq ft of mesh. Divide the weight per metre by 3.28 for the weight per foot.

What is the chain link weight formula?

In words: the wire in one square metre of mesh, worked out from the mesh size and the wire thickness, plus an allowance for the weave. That length of wire is weighed as steel, with the zinc on its surface. The calculator does this on our server and widens the answer into a range.

Is heavier chain link a stronger fence?

Not by weight alone. Strength comes from the wire's tensile strength, and life from its coating. Wire in the Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence is two to three times as strong as chain link wire in Alpha and Zeta Nova, on posts 5 to 6 m apart.

Chain link vs knotted fence

Does SIMO Securon make chain link?

Yes, in the Alpha, Zeta Nova and Pi grades, rated as its grade (10 to 35+ years in C1 to C3 environments with correct installation). This calculator weighs chain link to the standards' sizes; ask us for the weight of a SIMO Securon roll in writing.
