Fencing cost per metre: what does a rate per running metre cover?
Last updated
Fencing cost per metre, or per running metre, is the price of one metre of finished fence along the boundary. It covers the fabric, its share of the posts, braces and fittings, and the installation if it is included. Per running foot is the same divided by about 3.28. Multiply by your boundary for the total.

What does a fence need per running metre?
A knotted fence needs a post every 5 metres and conventional galvanised chain link a post every 2.5 metres, with braced strain posts at the corners, every 10th post and each side of a gate. Over a whole boundary that becomes:
| Boundary | Posts, knotted fence (5 m) | Posts, chain link (2.5 m) | Pits, knotted fence | Pits, chain link | Rolls (30 m) | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 m | 20 | 40 | 28 | 48 | 4 | Work it out |
| 250 m | 52 | 100 | 68 | 124 | 9 | Work it out |
| 500 m | 100 | 200 | 124 | 240 | 17 | Work it out |
| 1,000 m | 200 | 400 | 240 | 480 | 34 | Work it out |
| 5,000 m | 1,000 | 2,000 | 1,200 | 2,400 | 167 | Work it out |
Counts for SIMO Securon Zeta Nova, a Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence 6 ft high, with a strain post at each corner and every 10th post. Every strain and corner post is braced, and each post and brace needs a pit.

Fencing rate per running foot, per metre and per km
- Per running foot: the rate per running metre divided by about 3.28.
- Per kilometre: the rate per running metre times 1,000. The calculator gives a supplied and installed range for fences of 5 km or more.
- What a quote per running metre should say: the fabric, its height and grade; the posts, braces and fittings; the toppings, such as RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire; the installation; the transport; and GST.
- Jali (chain link) and tarbandi (wire fencing) rates are often for the mesh or wire alone. A knotted fence needs around half the posts of chain link and installs about 40 percent faster, so compare finished fence with finished fence.
More about fencing cost per metre
What sets the rate per running metre?
The fence (height, grade and toppings), the ground and how the posts are set, the corners and gates for the length, the service (supply only, or supplied and installed), and the size of the job. See fence installation cost for the site’s part.
How long is my boundary?
Measure it, or work it out from the area: a square acre is about 255 metres around. The fencing cost per acre page and the calculator turn an area in any unit into a boundary.
FAQ
Fencing cost per metre: questions
What is a running metre of fence?
One metre of finished fence measured along the boundary, whatever its height; quotes often write it as rmt or per meter. A rate per running metre should include the fabric and its share of the posts, braces and fittings; ask whether it includes the installation, the transport and GST.
How do I turn a rate per running metre into a rate per running foot?
Divide it by about 3.28, the feet in a metre. To go the other way, multiply a rate per running foot by 3.28. Per kilometre, multiply the rate per running metre by 1,000.
Why is the rate per metre lower on a longer fence?
Because some costs come once per job: bringing the crew and the tools to site, setting out, and the corners and gates. Spread over a longer boundary, they add less to each metre.
What do jali and tarbandi mean?
Jali is chain link mesh, and tarbandi (taar bandi) is wire fencing. A jali rate per metre is often for the mesh alone; ask for the rate per running metre of finished fence, with posts and installation, to compare it with a knotted fence.
