Fencing cost per acre: how much does it cost to fence 1 acre?
Last updated
Fencing cost per acre is worked out along the boundary, not over the area. A square acre is about 255 metres around, and one twice as long as it is wide about 270 metres. A SIMO Securon Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence needs about 52 posts there, against 104 for conventional galvanised chain link.

How much does it cost to fence 1 acre?
Start with the length of fence, because that is what you pay for. A square acre is about 64 metres a side and about 255 metres around; an acre twice as long as it is wide is about 270 metres around. Then count the posts and rolls for the fence you choose, and price them with the installation.
| Land | Boundary, square | Boundary, twice as long as wide | Posts, knotted fence (5 m) | Posts, chain link (2.5 m) | Rolls (30 m) | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 acre | 255 m | 270 m | 52 | 104 | 9 | Work out 1 acre |
| 2 acres | 360 m | 380 m | 72 | 144 | 12 | Work out 2 acres |
| 5 acres | 570 m | 605 m | 116 | 228 | 19 | Work out 5 acres |
| 10 acres | 805 m | 855 m | 164 | 324 | 27 | Work out 10 acres |
Counts for SIMO Securon Zeta Nova, a Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence 6 ft high, with a strain post at each corner and every 10th post. A gate adds a braced post each side; the calculator counts them and gives the dated price range for your own land.
Five acres is not five times one acre: the boundary grows with the square root of the area, so the fence per acre falls as the land grows. A square 10-acre farm needs about 805 metres of fence, a little over three times the fence of one acre.
Fencing price per acre: farm, chain link or knotted fence
- On a farm, what the fence must keep out sets the height. For nilgai (blue bull) and cattle, a fence needs to be at least 6 ft high; for wild boar, it must be tight at the bottom. SIMO Securon suggests a 6 ft Q-Knot™ fixed knot fence on the graduated grid, in Zeta Nova (20 years) or Alpha (35 years or more). More in the nilgai and wild boar guide.
- Conventional galvanised chain link costs less upfront. Its posts stand 2.5 to 3 metres apart, and it carries 40 to 60 GSM of zinc, so in Indian conditions it lasts 2 to 5 years.
- A knotted fence needs around half the posts, because its posts stand 5 to 6 metres apart, and installs about 40 percent faster than chain link. Against conventional galvanised chain link, by grade: Pi is up to 30 percent more cost effective. Zeta Nova is 10 to 20 percent more cost effective, with twice the life. Alpha is up to 10 percent more cost effective, and longer lasting.
The chain link vs knotted fence calculator puts the two side by side for your own land.
Fencing cost per acre by state
Land is measured differently across India, and each state has its own crop raiders, coast and schemes. The state pages work in the local unit:
- Maharashtra: acres, hectares and guntha.
- Tamil Nadu: acres, cents and grounds.
- Uttar Pradesh: acres and hectares.
- Karnataka: acres and gunta.
- Gujarat: acres, guntha and the vigha.
- Madhya Pradesh: acres and hectares.
- Rajasthan: acres, hectares and the bigha.
More about fencing cost per acre
What sets the price per acre?
The length of fence first, then the fence and the site:
- The boundary: its length, and how many corners and gates it has. Every corner and gate adds a braced post.
- The fence: the height, the grade and anything on top, such as RTHT™ high tensile barbed wire.
- The ground: rock or hard ground takes longer to dig; a slope needs shorter runs and more strain posts.
- The posts: set in concrete or driven into the ground.
- The service: supply only, or supplied and installed by SIMO Securon’s crews. The calculator shows an installed range for fences of 5 km or more; for a smaller fence, ask us, because nearby sites can be combined.
- The size of the job: a longer fence brings the price per metre down.
Why does a long, narrow plot cost more per acre?
A square has the shortest boundary for its area. Stretch the same acre to twice as long as it is wide and the boundary grows from about 255 to about 270 metres; four times as long, and it is about 318 metres. If your land is irregular, measure the boundary: the calculator takes the length directly.
How does the calculator turn acres into a fence?
It turns the area and its shape into a boundary, and lays out a post every 5 metres for a knotted fence. It adds a strain post at every corner, every 10th post and each side of a gate, and counts the rolls for your grade and height. The price is worked out on our server from the team’s current rates, widened into a range and rounded. It is a guide for planning, not a quotation.
FAQ
Fencing cost per acre: questions
How much fence do I need for 1 acre?
About 255 metres for a square acre, about 64 metres a side, and about 270 metres for an acre twice as long as it is wide. An irregular plot needs more. Measure the boundary if you can: the calculator takes the length directly, or the area with its shape.
How many posts are needed to fence 1 acre?
For a square acre with four corners and no gate, a knotted fence with a post every 5 metres needs about 52 posts. Conventional galvanised chain link, at a post every 2.5 metres, needs about 104. Each gate adds a braced post on each side.
Why is there no single fencing price per acre?
Because the price follows the boundary and the site: the length of fence, its height and grade, the ground, how the posts are set, the corners and gates, and the size of the job. A long, narrow acre needs more fence than a square one. The calculator gives a dated range for your own land.
Is a knotted fence more expensive per acre than chain link?
Chain link costs less upfront. A knotted fence needs around half the posts, installs about 40 percent faster and lasts longer. Against conventional galvanised chain link, Zeta Nova is 10 to 20 percent more cost effective, with twice the life, and Pi up to 30 percent.
Compare chain link and knotted fenceHow do I work out the cost for land in guntha, cents or bigha?
Give the area in the unit you use. The calculator takes guntha in Maharashtra and Gujarat, gunta in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and cents in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Rajasthan and Gujarat it takes the bigha or vigha by its size. It turns the area into a boundary first.
